Our family, the interns, Dru's(intern) parents, a pastor and missionary from Uganda, and a Peace Corp worker got to share festivities together on Christmas Eve. We had breakfast, dinner, opened stockings and gifts, read the story of Christ's birth, sang many Carole's and even got to build ginger bread houses. The afternoon was set aside to prepare for the following day where we would feed a village a meal as well as give clothes, gifts, do crafts, and play games. We were able to make bags of different food items for 90 families. I will post pictures of Christmas day in a few days but first I wanted to write about what we did as a team.
Jason got all the guys prayer shawls and pangas (machetes that can be used for a wide variation of things here). In the picture below Abby is looking at the gift Tim got for all of the girls (myself included) a chocolate bar and a jump rope.
Our garage was used as the packaging and processing center. We had to measure out 1 kilogram bags of beans, ugali flour (maize flour), sugar, rice, and corn or maize. We also gave laundry bar soap, toothpaste,tooth brush, a can of tomato paste and tea. 90 bags of all these items were put together.
Christmas Eve was a day that we could be together, reflect on our Savior's birth and remember He is the reason we are all here in the first place. Then because all He has done for us we have a desire to go and show His love to others.
