Home away from home

kiddos room

We are now living in a town that is 2 and a half hours away from our home in G-town. This has made is possible to go home over the weekends so far and that has been so wonderful. The kiddos treat all their toys as if they were brand new and have have so much space to play outside. I have also gotten to visit some of my neighbors when I got back and it was so good to just reconnect with them. Perhaps my next blog will be about that. I wanted to show some pictures of this new home we are staying in.

It is very nice new apartments. We rented out 4- each has two bedrooms. One for our family, one for the guy college interns, one for the girl college interns, and one communal apartment where we eat our dinners together and have bible studies as well as other classes. It is a 15 minute walking distance to the main part of town, but far enough away to have privacy. Last week I spent the majority of my time visiting, different, NGO's (non-government organizations), schools, and churches to find out if we can help out in any projects. I was able to meet the superintendent of the local hospital who gave us a tour of all the wards. He granted us favor to be able to come anytime to visit within any ward and help out in whatever way even if it was just to follow around a pre-med student. Right now the college interns begin being plugged into the community- while up til now they were only dedicated to learning Swahili.

Our biggest challenge here in the apartments is there is now indoor running water. In the beginning I couldn't believe how much extra work it was to wash dishes outside. The kids loved to be involved. We just accumulate so many dishes with every meal being a family of 5. Jason was able to make a wonderful contraption for our kitchen so that we can now wash our dishes inside. We just have to haul water into the bucket everyday- not bad at all.

The bathrooms are usually pretty disgusting. They are the usual outside pit latrines, filled with alive flies or dead flies and a horrendous ordor. When you read this I do not want to feel sorry for us. Instead I want you to know that in many parts of the world the bathroom conditions are far, FAR worse that how we have it now. Please pray for these people who are most likely battling with sickness due to the poor living conditions they have. Also could you take the time out to thank the Lord for the many blessings you have including a toilet and home that has clean running water inside.

Wow thank you so much for sharing that information. It really does remind us of how hard some people have it, how much harder we need to pray to say thank you for our homes and to help others that really need it more than ourselves.
