The original Shepherd no longer works at the farm. A new one was hired and his name, in English, is David. How cool is That! I am always amazed to watch any Shepherd in action. The flock really does follow their voice to cross the road, to maneuver between thorn bushes (it can be like an obstacle course) and to come when it is meal time. The weapon of choice out here is a panga, a long knife to protect the animals. Everyday the Shepherd for the farm, comes to collect the goats out of their goat house. Then he proceeds to lead them out of the compound, walking with them for several hours so they can find places to graze, and then they return later in the afternoon. You will often find a Shepherd walking behind the animals with his hands grasping both ends of his staff that is resting across his shoulders. Most shepherds wear a simple shirt and a kikoy (a man skirt) usually hiked up a little to make walking easier. Some Shepherds are young boys, that really should be in school. Some are old men. Others are the ages in between. It is a very important occupation because animals are a pivotal part of life. They are paid for dowry when a couple gets married. Animals are a person's inheritance and a sign of wealth or placement in society. And of course, our favorite part, is that they provide delicious meat for our nourishment. Animals need a Shepherd to watch over and care for them. To see the signs of early sickness and get the treatment in time. To provide for them. To keep them out of danger. Shepherds do all this and more.
The Kenyan elections are next week, on August 8th. Rumors abound of different possibilities as a result of who is elected. We are spectators here but desire the country to come out of this stronger and unified. Many things are at a stand still right now....until after the elections. Everyone is waiting for the day to come and go. There has been violence in the past, will there be any this time Around? How will things Be? I cling to God's promises. "He takes care of His people like a Shepherd. He gathers them like lambs in His arms and carries them close to Him. He gently leads the mothers of the lambs." Isaiah 40:11

So enjoyed your post about shepherds. It made me think about Jesus as our Good Shepherd. Praying along with you for Kenya.
