It is that time of year again. When the current interns have reached the 1 year point. One year ago we were strangers to eachother and now we cannot even imagine how life was without you all being apart of it. The first 4 months of you being here, we have watched you begin to learn the language of Swahili getting bumps and bruises as words are said incorrectly or there being a loss of words in mid conversations. You Ladies immediately had to develop tough exteriors as you walk the streets every day and heard cat calls followed by your phone number being requested. Every. Single. Day. After language learning class was finished you stepped out to minister into this community. This community is often very difficult to serve. You Ladies were able to build friendships at whatever location you found yourselves in. You men have risen to represent what a Godly man is. Your team has always been ready to lend a helping hand and constantly serving whether it be patients who have come to receive medical care at the clinic or a small child who desires attention at the local school. There are also times that all of you pour out the Love of Jesus to an individual or to an entire family, and although this goes unnoticed by the Human eye, our Good Heavenly Father sees all and is so pleased by each one of you.
I have seen each one of you struggle at some point or another and each time you were lifted up in prayer to allow this "testing of your faith to develop perseverance, because Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything" James 1:3-4. At times we would want to step in to prevent you from having to endure the difficult times because in the moment the "suffering" seemed to much to bare. But this is when you walked out Romans 5:3-5, "..sufferings produces perseverance; perseverance; character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into your hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us."
Tomorrow there will be 10 new interns that will land in Kenya. They are not replacing you because this is not even possible. Our hearts almost feel torn, because how can we possible have room to love these new ones as much as we love You? Somehow this will happen but what we want you to know our love for you will not lesson or decrease. We will forever look upon this time with you with such fondness and affection. The time to say goodbye seems to be creeping up closer and that is a day we absolute dread. But until then we will cherish each day we live in gtown together. Please know we are so proud of you and we love you immensely!
"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it careful round with hobbies and little luxeries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket- safe dark, motionless, airless- it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.....The only place outside of Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all dangers....of love is Hell." C.S.Lewis, The Four Loves

Dear God, Thank you for the willingness you have blessed the Witt family with to embrace & release interns, despite the pain. Bless them with resilient hearts, empowered by Your Holy Spirit to absorb all that life brings without recoiling in ungodly self-protection. Heal their fears, & guard their minds against every semblance of hopeless or joylessness, comfort them when they grieve, & free them to radiate your love, I ask in the Name of Jesus Christ.
Renee said it! I would add.... Thank you for that C.S. Lewis quote.... how convicting! I lived a fair part of life that way.... possibly explains why I didn't get married until 33! Thank God that he is faithful to us even when we get it so wrong humanly! There is certainly risk in truly loving....but ohhhhh....the sweet reward, here, and more importantly, for eternity!!!!
